Introduction: Shantou University invites national and international applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director, English Language Center.
Shantou University, located in Shantou, Guangdong Province, is only comprehensive university in the eastern region of the Guangdong Province with a population of over 20 million people. Shantou University currently has about 1,500 staff and over 9,000 students working towards Bachelor, Masters and PhD degrees in the Colleges and Schools of Arts and Design, Business, Engineering, Journalisms and Communications, Law, Liberal Arts, Medicine, and Science.
Founded in 1981 by Chinese Governments and Mr. Li Ka-shing in Hong Kong, Shantou University has been receiving significant funding from Li Ka Shing Foundation. In the last 33 years, Li Ka Shing Foundation has donated and committed over HK$6 billion to the development of the University.
Shantou University has been recognized as a leader in education reform in China. Since 2001, the University has undertaken the various reforms with the theme of “Good University Governance for Academic Freedom,” The reform initiatives included governance of academics, finance, resources, human resources; program and curriculum reform, English Enhancement Program, Credit System, Residential Colleges, System Integration based Curriculum for Medicine and CDIO for Engineering and so on. More recently, a university wide Advanced Undergraduate Education reform is being implemented. The reform achievements have been widely recognized by various levels of governments, peer institutions and public in large. In 2012, Ministry of Education, Guangdong Government and Li Ka-Shing Foundation signed an agreement for joint development of Shantou University. This was a significant step towards developing Shantou University into an internationally recognized excellent university.
STU’s English Language Center provides English language instruction for all students of Shantou University, and offers a pioneering program of language instruction that emphasizes not only practical language proficiency, but also critical thinking skills, intercultural competence, and sustainable independent language learning. Job description: Primary duties of the Executive Director include:
v Strategic planning, innovation, and curriculum development.
v Overall management of the ELC (hiring, work assignments, budget, performance assessment).
v Facilitating professional development of faculty and staff.
v Supervising teaching and testing.
v Serving as intra- and inter-university liaison.
v Teaching one or more courses.
Qualifications: Candidates should have the following:
v Leadership and administrative experience in language teaching programs.
v Significant language teaching experience.
v Relevant academic credentials, preferably a doctorate in a field related to language teaching.
v Strong English language skills. Chinese language skills are also an asset.
Salary and Benefits: This position offers a highly competitive salary, determined according to the appointee's qualifications and experience. Additional benefits include free housing, health insurance, airfare, and vacation allowances. The start date will be July 1, 2014 or a mutually agreed date.
